National currency unit of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani Manat, abbreviated as AZN.

1 Azerbaijani Manat (1 AZN) is 100 “qəpik”. Azerbaijani manat banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 manat. Coins (qapik) are issued in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 qapik.

Azerbaijani manat is the only currency that is being used in Azerbaijan. Therefore, you have to exchange your money upon or before arrival either in the airport, train station or in the exchange offices and banks. Most exchange offices accept Euro, British Pound, Turkish Lira and Russian Ruble. To check current exchange rates for foreign currency use information from the Central Bank of Azerbaijan: AZN Rates.

Tips for Travelers

  • You can use ATMs throughout Baku to take manats. Most ATMs accept Visa, Visa Electron, Master Card and Maestro cards
  • If you are going to use local transport often, then don’t forget to have some coins in your pocket. Bus and metro services cost 20 qapiks
  • You can use your credit card to pay in most restaurants, cafes and shopping malls, but please consider that not all of them accept cards. Especially if you are in a small cafe/restaurant/market you will rarely find POS terminals there. That’s why you should always carry some cash
  • Be cautious with pickpockets, especially if you are in a crowded  place
